Pitch

I've struggled with this word. It is obvious that it has a meaning beyond the obvious given the context in which it is applied:

Gen 6:14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

Pitch within and without. That is bitumen, tar, not exactly a pleasant little boat to sail in, it must've stunk!

I was mulling along these lines when I saw the pattern:

Gen 6:14 and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

Still that didn't help. Though there are interesting notes to be made concerning those two letters.

I then turned to Scofield's Notes which go straight to what I was sensing ...

It should be noted that the word translated "pitch" in (Gen_6:14) is the same word translated "atonement" in (Lev_17:11) etc. It is atonement that keeps out the waters of judgment and makes the believer's position "in Christ" safe and blessed.

Strong's Concordance:
H3722
כּפר
kâphar
kaw-far'
A primitive root; to cover (specifically with bitumen); figuratively to expiate or condone, to placate or cancel: - appease, make (an) atonement, cleanse, disannul, forgive, be merciful, pacify, pardon, to pitch, purge (away), put off, (make) reconcile (-liation).

The ark that we are making is a process of separation unto God. We pitch out the corruption of the old man, we cleanse ourself - internally and externally - of the ways of the Kingdom of Satan.
